For Inquiry 2 I am considering using The Great Gatsby films. They are not on the list, but I think they would work really well for this assignment. These films are a great example of the producers making the film fit into the time period that they came out in, especially the newest one. There are many aspects of the newest one that fit into 2013, but not necessarily in 1922 which is when the film takes place. I have seen the one that recently came out, but I have never seen the older one. I am excited to watch the first one and compare the two because I think it will be a very interesting comparison. I have often seen the first one on Netflix but have never taken the time to watch it.
The main aspect of my paper that I plan to revise is the organization. Right now I mention one scene in the introduction paragraph as the example, but I proceed to talk about two other scenes before talking about the first scene mentioned. I plan to make the focus of the paper the first scene mentioned, but also briefly talk about the other two scenes. I also plan to describe the main scene in more detail so that there is more proof to back up my argument. A second aspect of my paper that I need to revisit is the conclusion paragraph. The way I have it ending now does not tie the whole paper together. My last paragraph is more of a body paragraph that I added a conclusion sentence to. I enjoyed the peer review session not only because of the constructive criticism, but also for the compliments. It is much easier to take suggestions from someone who is also giving you compliments along the way.
In my opinion "A Changing Identity" was the better essay. I believe this for many reasons, but one of them being the subject of the two writings. "Soft Rain on a Hot Mind" is about a story that was written post-WWII. The author talks about how this story has many aspects that would scare someone who is still paranoid about atomic bombs. One thing I found interesting was the feelings that Bradbury was trying to evoke from his audience. It was almost like he was trying to scare them into thinking that something bad could happen again. While the analysis was good, I preferred "A Changing Identity". The plot of the graphic novel that is being analyzed is similar to the movie I am choosing to analyze, so it immediately interested me. The author of this essay put a lot of time and thought into analyzing the imagery used in the graphic novel. I believe that this technique can be used while close reading movies, as they have a lot to do with imagery. Overall, both essays were well written and brought up very good points about the stories.
I have chosen to analyze the movie Up for Inquiry 1. This film interests me because I had heard from many people how good this movie was. Everyone in my family had already seen it, and went on and on how about how much they loved it. When I saw it on the list of Best Picture nominees I decided this would be a great opportunity to see what all the talk was about. I watched Up this week and I can now say that it is every bit as good as my family and friends said it was. Initially it seems like a story about losing a loved one and how you cannot dwell on the loss forever. I believe this story is truly about how often reality does not live up to our expectations. One scene in particular jumps out at me, but I am still planning on looking more into it.
